If a PSU isn't powerfull enough to power my new mobo/XP1700+ will it cause any damage?

In other words can I try it with my two 250W PSU's I have ( 1 which is AMD approved ) and worst case scenario is I have to wait for the funds to get a new PSU.

If it's very boderline will downclocking the CPU to say 1gig until I get a new PSU help?

Basically I got the CPU and mobo ( tomorrow ) but can't afford PSU for a couple of weeks at least.

ta

Dom.

You wont damage your system as such, unless your power supply is faulty, but if it is underpowered, your system will be unstable, and you may experience random reboots, BSODS and crashes.

Good, thought that was the case. I'm well aware I'm risking stability, I guess from voltage dips and 'brownouts' but as long as I am not going to do any hardware damage I'm willing to take the risk .

Normally, a well-designed PSU will, if overloaded, simply 'trip off' (you need to unplug it and let it 'cool down' for it to reset).

However, from time to time, there is a post from someone who has experienced a 'catastrophic' PSU failure which sends a massive voltage spike into the system, with disasterous impact to one or more components.

Can't say how many empty chambers there are, but you are playing 'Russian Roulette'.
