72Mhz is what I am at just now, can the card handle higher? It's a Hercules 3D Prophet MX.

I have had a Geforce DDR on a 100mhz AGP but it did have a better than stock heatsink on it but it was stable.

It just failed now at 73Mhz, hmm, no cooling on the card though.

Stick an old socket 7 heatsink on it if you have one laying about. I stick all my heatsinks on with my homemade thermal epoxy which consists of those orange double syringe 90 second epoxy you get from B&Q with a third of copper grease from Halfords or any auto store. I have tested the thermal transfer using a temp probe and it is excellent and also once it sets I have never managed to get any current to pass through it when testing with my digi multimeter so I also think it is pretty much non conductive but I use it sparingly just in case . It works out a lot cheaper than Arctic silver and performs well.

Why are B&Qs so BIG these days! I got lost last time I went in there. But I'll check out the epoxy stuff, there is a Halfords nearby, might as well get some more conductive paint while I'm in there.

There is a pishy HS on the gfx card but no fan (thats what I meant by no cooling, forgot to mention that). How much extra Mhz could I get with a fan? Not much surely, maybe I should just whack in the GF2GTS and see if that fares any better at 143FSB.

I would think that the GTS would be way better as the G2 MX was limited by bandwidth and more fps was gained by increasing the ram rather than the core speed. I had an old G2 MX 200 with no fan and I added one and got a lot more in core speed and ram so its worth a try I guess.

Jinxter, I had a Herc MX. You want to be overclocking the memory speed. The core speed won't matter much. You'll only get a couple of FPS or so overclocking the core. It's like running an Athlon with a 10MHz memory bus. Uping your 1600 to 1700 won't matter as long as you are restricted by that slow system bus.

Unfortunately my Herc didn't overclock that well. I had an I/O Magic MX that would beat it. But I could get my Herc up to 210 MHz memory bus. (I think that's what it was it was a long time ago.)

What I'd do if I were you is ditch the MX and get a GeForce GTS-V. If you're in the states you can get one at newegg.com for under $50. With my 1 Gig Duron with my Herc MX fully overclocked I got about 60 FPS in Quake III @ 1024x768 @ 32Bit color. When I put in the GTS and overclocked it: 100 FPS. It's not worth putting a lot of effort into overclocking an MX, they just suck.

Its true from 200 to 250 I just noticed 5% gain and then I pumped the memory to 197 and noticed about 8-10% they just not godd overclockers.

My Eagle3d MX400 is stable right now at 250/197Mhz at 73Mhz AGP (147fsb).
