I've got this MB on order, and was wondering if anyone can report on how well RAID 0 works - does it noticeably affect performance? Is it worth the increased risk of data loss (due to disk failure and Promise glitches)?
I was planning on booting from the first (small) partition on the RAID array, and using the rest for video, MP3, etc. I was thinking that seek times would be minimal during boot-up (especially under XP), as all the data would be concentrated in the first 1% of the tracks (on a 240 Gig array). I was going to put cooperative applications on a different drive entirely.
Is there a better way to use RAID?
Thanks for your thoughts and opinions.

I have been using a raid config for over ayear now and all is well. Performance increase is great! I have only had one time where I had a little data corruption, and that was when I overclocked a little bit too much on my Giga 667 pe ultra. This is a very nice board and does very well handling the raid 0 I have set up. You will have no problems. If you are nervous at all, just get a spare drive and once you have it all set up, make a Norton Ghost copy on the spare and all will be well.

Thanks, pastorjay, for sharing your experiences with RAID 0 on this card.
You didn't mention how you use the RAID array. Do you boot off of it? How do you have it partitioned?
Another question, which I will also post seperately, is if you are running with >1 stick of ddr sdram, and if so, if you have seen adverse impact on performance, as I gather some people are experiencing.
I'm looking forward to the new MB!
Thanks,

Sorry it has taken so long to reply. I have been on vacation and I am not at home to use my computer.
I do boot off of the raid config. 2x 40 gb hard drives in a raid 0. Not a problem at all. I have also been able to run 2 sticks of ram up to ddr 400 with no problems at all. And seems to not affect my performance at all. I will be home tomorrow night, so I will have some more time to answer any other questions.

Hi paulInCO I have the Ultra 2 mobo and I found a big performance increase. The SATA RAID is the same as the IDE raid but the only problem with the SATA raid it that its really slow when I use ghost to ghost an image.

When you are using RAID-0, you should be using ECC RAM and conservative timings (ref. Linux Uptime project). Running RAID-0 without a current backup is like flying an experimental airplane without a parachute. (c)2002 - Zepper.
