Well, I got tired of explorer having an unknown error, and having to close all the time, while accessing the server on the LAN.

I was trying to listen to some tunes today, off the server, and got the explorer has to close thing every 5 minutes or so.

How did I fix it? I installed win2k Pro on the machine, and ditched XP home. It works fine now.

Accessing the big drive on the server, takes a second or 2 now, like it should. With XP home, it took 10 to 15 seconds, sometimes longer, or you would get the explorer has to close thing.

I am benchmarking this system now (on the A64) to see if I lost anything. So far the single SATA raptor and the raptor RAID setup are dead on with XP. I would assume my graphics performance will be better, or the same with the BFG 6800 Ultra OC also.

So far, I am happier, until I hit something that needs XP or something, like WMP 10, but I wasn't thrilled with that, am sticking with the highest that 2k Pro can use, which is 9.

Equally, are you sure a format and clean install of XP Home wouldn't have solved it too ?

XP home with SP1 included. This problem has plauged me for quite a while. And yes, I have moved drives around, and did many clean format's and installs.

It just seems like XP takes longer to find a machine on the LAN, it always has, on all machines using XP. Now the server is using XP Pro, and 2k Pro hooks up with that machine in 2 seconds. The other XP home machines take 10 to 15 seconds, and explorer errors out about 50 percent of the time.

I know it is fixable, but I don't feel like the hassle. XP pro on this machine just works better out of the box. Funny thing, when I was listening to an MP3 on this machine with the MP3's on the server, explorer would crash out, WMP would survive and keep going, but when you closed out WMP, it would still be playing the music till you rebooted, or went into task manager and closed it out, it would disappear when you closed the program, but was still running under processes.

And strange thing is, it does that everytime, on every clean install.

2k Pro works well, and I will stick with it for awhile, why pay 300 bucks for something you aren't using anyways.
