If a buy a random Duron 600-850, what are my chances like to get it too 1gig and beyond? Are there even CPUs which won't go up to 700 or something???
If a buy an overcklocking system and the cpu wouldn't do it, I'd be kinda you know...

Overclockability of any CPU will vary from chip to chip. my personal experiences with Duron cpu's were a duron 600 oc'ed to 700 and a diferent duron 600 oc'ed to 950. both were tested on the same system.
your chances of oc'ing to 1 gig are a gamble. you'll need a good MB, good ram, and other high quality components. I've read that the later durons seemed to overclock better then the older ones. ust keep in mind that if you over clock to any degree you are in effect getting more than what you paid for so you should be happy with your result even if you dont hit the gig

It's not that I'm one of those freaks who hunt the gig... It's just that I'd be rather displeased if I bought, as you said, high quality components ($$$$) and then discover that the cpu doesn't give more than a 50mhz improvement...
Maybe it's a good idea to purchase the cpu via ocz or something, unlocked and pretested...

durons are so cheap that you can get another if you're not happy with the first one.... that's what I'd do.

yope, I know they're quite cheap, but unfortunately I am REALLY short on money, so if U buy one, I surely cannot afford another one...

Go get a Duron 850....... 85-90% of them reaches 1Ghz.

For T/Bird, it's a bit tough to judge... generally, a 850 should be able to reach 1Ghz. I have a 900, 2 1Ghz and a 1.2Ghz in my possession. All overclock to a different extent... e.g. One of the 1Ghz could only do 1.15Ghz while the other has no problem in reaching 1.3Ghz. You can see them here: http://www.overclockers.co.nz/ocwbcg...&f=22&t=000029

;) I'd say that buying an OC'ed Duron from OCZ is a good idea, it worked for me.
Normally you would, I guess, have to buy from 4 to 10 different ones at 700 or so to get to 1ghz stable..
This particular one was a 600 for 69$, guaranteed to run 1ghz. It does that
It will actually do 1007 flawlessly, 1040 is stable, but generates errors in Prime95.
And as stated above somewhere, you need some extra things to be properly adjusted to 1ghz.. I had to get a good cooler, make a good airflow in the casing, and get a better PSU.
(Had a 300 W Codesign, but that kept me at 950/980.. updated to an Enermax.)
So yes it's a good idea.. providing you get the rest sorted out :D
(Oh, I forgot to mention, it's an oldie from week 36!!)
