A7N266-c-media 8738 sound problem.

Two identical systems. Both have the A7N266 mainboard. One with AthlonXP 1700 other with 1800. Both use the onboard sound and graphics under Windows ME. The sound chip is C-Media 8738. Using the standard WDM drivers, the sound is nonexistent, and software freezes randomly. Using VXD drivers, everything runs fine, except the chip runs 6-channel sound and SPDIF, but the VXD drivers will not support it. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get both working sound and full range sound?
Any help would be helpful.

There is M$ WDM hotfix on the M$ web page that may be of help. Sorry for no link but I am still sorting it out myself. I have not found the DL site, just referals to M$ tech support.
