Education genre fans to enjoy more value with new HD group
Singapore, 26 August 2008 – Come 1 September 2008, StarHub will be the first pay TV operator in Southeast Asia to carry The History Channel HD™ (History HD). History HD is the leading destination for revealing, award-winning, original non-fiction series and event-driven specials that connects history with viewers in an informative, immersive and entertaining manner across multiple platforms. Programming covers a diverse variety of historical genres ranging from military history to contemporary history, technology to natural history, as well as science, archaeology and pop culture. History HD will broadcast 100 percent HD content and offer viewers informative and entertaining series, specials and documentaries, including Ax Men, Cities of the Underworld, The Universe, Dogfights, Ancient Discoveries, and Ice Road Truckers.
“StarHub is pleased to be the first pay TV operator to introduce The History Channel HD in Southeast Asia. The addition of History HD on our pay TV line-up has provided another quality choice of HD content for our StarHub Digital Cable customers. I believe viewers, especially great fans of The History Channel, will be glad to know that they can now choose to watch their favourite programmes in high definition,” said Patrick Lim, StarHub's Head of Cable TV Services.
AETN All Asia Networks General Manager Louis Boswell said, “The reaction and feedback to The History Channel since it launched last year across the region has been amazing, so I am very happy that we are now able to give our viewers the opportunity to watch the channel in its full glory in crystal clear HD. Once again it underlines our commitment to become the leader in factual entertainment programming. We are thrilled to work with StarHub as our platform partner to kick off this exciting channel in Asia.”
The present HD Plus group, comprising NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL HD and Discovery HD, will be joined by The History Channel HD and repackaged into Education HD group. StarHub Digital Cable customers with StarHub’s HD set-top box and the Education Basic group can subscribe to the new Education HD group for just $8.56 (with GST) per month. As HD Plus is now priced at a monthly subscription fee of $16.05 (with GST), customers can now enjoy three HD channels for just half the original price!

In this way, not only can they enjoy more of their favourite genre, they can also enjoy substantial cost savings at the same time.”
Other than introducing Education HD which offers greater value-for-money, StarHub will offer another option to make HD channels even more affordable for local viewers. With immediate effect, customers can rent their first HD set-top boxes at a monthly rental fee of $6.42 (with GST). Previously, customers had to purchase a HD set-top box in order to enjoy the HD channels. The monthly rental fee of $6.42 is waived from now till 30 September 2008. NVISION 08 Larrabee "like a GPU from 2006"
Posted on 08/25/2008 @ 11:18 AM
NVIDIA's Andy Keane poke fun on Larrabee dismissing the multi-core CPU/GPU as wishful thinking - while admitting it needs to catch up with AMD's current Radeon graphics cards.
Andy Keane, general manager of the company's GPU computing group, spoke to reporters and mentioned that Larabee details remain undefined and it seems that it's x86 so it's going to solve the massively parallel computing problem.
John Mottram, chief architect for the company's GT200 core, raised further doubts about Larrabee's real-world performance, brushing aside Intel's announcements as marketing puff.
"As [blogger and CPU architect] Peter Glaskowsky said, the 'large' Larrabee in 2010 will have roughly the
same performance as a 2006 GPU from Nvidia or ATI."
Mottram also admits that they have underestimated the AMD RV770 GPU as a direct competitor to NVIDIA"s GT200 series.
He furthur Mottram as every square millimeter you add to the die is a very expensive millimeter. It's an incremental expense, not a linear function. It's cheaper to separate them."

No long iQueues for Apple iPhone 3G launch in Singapore

Unlike the long queues in Europe, Singapore's launch of the iPhone is a no event. There were no queues days before or camp overnight right here in Singapore.
In the late afternoon, there were just a couple of people but it seems that there are more onlookers and security guards than the queue itself.
This is probably because Singtel's launch is similar to Hong Kong. They do it on a reservation basis. Those who have reserved and contacted will get the device. No others would get the iPhone, no matter how early you came.
According to online reports, the number at 10pm there was, according to SingTel – 81.

Rumours at Intel IDF - NVIDIA launching x86 CPU at NVISION next week
Posted on 08/21/2008 @ 02:13 PM
According to inquirer, there is a widespread rumour at Intel IDF that NVIDIA will launch a x86 processor at nVISION next week.
This is not a surprise as we have seen NVIDIA claiming that they have better GPUs which are more complex than the Intel CPUs. Furthermore, When Intel Core architecture replaced the Netburst technology, a group of engineers left INtel and formed a company Stexar.
In 2006, NVIDIA bought Stexar, thus acquiring an experienced group of x86 engineers. Early this year, NVIDIA launched APX 2500 procesor for the mobile phone using ARM architecture. Thus, NVIDIA is not only capable of making GPUs, it is able to handle CPUs too. Early this month, Transmeta also announced that it sold some technology patents to NVIDIA for 25 million.
I think it is only a matter of time we see a processor from NVIDIA, maybe based on the older NetBurst technology.

Starhub new DemandTV requires additional broadband connection
Posted on 08/20/2008 @ 08:55 PM
Starhub new DemandTV requires additional broadband connection. If you are a subscriber to Starhub Cable TV with a Digital HD or Digital TV box. You will noticed that when you press the PPV.VOD button on your remote will give you an error - network not found.
A check on Starhub's website reveals that the new Demand TV service requires a hubstation. We all know that Hubstation supports recording but the rest of the features remain the same.
Why is it that Demand TV requires a HubStation? That is because it requires the broadband connection that the it provides. What that means is that, if you just hook your Set top box to the RF connector, Demand TV won't work.
If you use the standard Digital set top box or the Digital HD set top box, you will need to have MaxOnline (internet service) connection. To use the feature, just connect a ethernet cable to the ethernet port at the back of the set top box. Once that is done, the Ethernet LED light on the set top box will be lit up.
Once that is done, you can now enjoy Demand TV on your non Hubstation set top box. We can conclude that the VOD service is actually a form of IPTV.

Intel G45 DX10 performance lags behind AMD 790GX
Posted on 08/20/2008 @ 05:31 PM
A lot of talk has been going on about the G45 performance. In our own test running the QX9770 processor, the performance on the G45 seems to be lagging behind a Phenom 9550 equipped AMD 790GX mainboard.
In 3DMark06, the G45 scored 1180 marks while the 790GX paired with a slower processor is able to churn out performance values of 1787. If sideport is enabled on the 790GX, it could shoot up to 2000 points.
From the results of 3DMark06, we can see that the a Phenom 9550 (2.2GHz) with 790GX performs 50% to 100% faster (depending on whether sideport is enabled) against the Intel G45 paired with the 3.2GHz QX9770.
It remains to be seen when will Intel be able to come out with a IGP that is faster than the AMD variant. Will a G55 be able to improve by another 50% to match it?

Intel Shifts Future Core™ Processors Into Turbo Mode
Latest Processors, Mobile Platforms and Technologies Showcased at IDF
INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, San Francisco, Aug. 19, 2008 – In his Intel Developer Forum keynote today, Pat Gelsinger detailed the roadmap for Intel's continued march toward pervasive, higher performance and power efficient computing. The senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Digital Enterprise Group discussed new features of the company's next-generation processor family including a new turbo mode that shifts the processor into a higher gear for mind-blowing performance without a heat penalty.
The company's first desktop PC chips branded Intel® Core™ i7 processors and initial energy-efficient, high-performance server products (codenamed "Nehalem-EP") will be first to production. Intel is also planning to manufacture a second server derivative designed for the expandable sever market ("Nehalem-EX"), and desktop ("Havendale" and "Lynnfield") and mobile ("Auburndale" and "Clarksfield") client versions in the second half of 2009.
"Our engineers have put together an incredible processing family here that will include a tremendous amount of new processor features all centered on delivering faster computer performance and terrific energy efficiency," Gelsinger said.
The next-generation Core microarchitecture also features
Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology* delivering up to 8-threaded performance capability on 4 cores in the initial versions and best-in-class memory bandwidth thanks to the new QuickPath Interconnect. QuickPath is a technology that connects processors, chipsets and memory together, and delivers up to three times the memory bandwidth of previous generation Core microarchitecture solutions.
The new Intel Xeon processor X7460 with 6 cores and 16MB L3 cache for expandable servers launching in September has already broken multiple performance world records1. An 8-socket IBM System x* 3950 M2 server became the first platform to break the 1 million tpmC barrier on the TPC*-C benchmark. New 4-Socket performance records include TPC*-C on HP Proliant* DL580 G5, TPC*-E on Dell PowerEdge* R900, SPECjbb*2005 on Sun Fire* X4450 and SPECint*_rate2006 on Fujitsu-Siemens PRIMERGY* RX600 S4.
Gelsinger also discussed the industry's first many-core Intel Architecture (IA) based design, codenamed "Larrabee." Expected in 2009 or 2010, the first product based on Larrabee will target the personal computer graphics market, support DirectX and OpenGL, and run today's games and programs. Larrabee is expected to kick start an industry-wide effort to create and optimize software for the dozens, hundreds and thousands of cores expected to power future computers.
The Intel executive also outlined Intel's vision for the next wave of the Internet, called the Embedded Internet. Emerging markets in the embedded computing space such as IP networking and security, video intelligence, medical, in-vehicle infotainment and home automation can greatly benefit from the always-on Internet connectivity. Gelsinger said that this area is another growth opportunity for Intel and the high-tech industry, and predicted that there will be 15 billion devices connected to the Internet as a result of the rapid rise of the embedded internet.
Where Will Mobile Computing's "On-the-Go, Go?"
Showing the breadth and health of Intel's next-generation processors, David (Dadi) Perlmutter, executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Mobility Group today demonstrated the first working laptop platform codenamed "Calpella."
"Calpella will redefine how we compute on-the-go by giving users a stunning new computing visual experience, better manageability and security, enhanced turbo mode features and evolutionary power management for notebooks," said Perlmutter. "It is all about dramatic mobile performance without compromise."
New Mobile Processors Unveiled
Building on the recent
Intel Centrino® 2 launch for notebook PCs in July, Perlmutter unveiled
Intel's first-ever mobile-focused quad-core laptop workstation – the Intel Core 2 Extreme processor. While the products include four cores, they only use 45 watts of power.
Perlmutter also introduced the company's second-generation dual-core mobile processors for increasingly popular ultra thin and light notebook PCs.
He also outlined upcoming mobile platform enhancements including the Intel High-Performance SATA Solid-State Drive product line for faster system responsiveness, lower power consumption and rugged, reliable operation and available later this year, Intel Anti-Theft Technology, which features intelligent hardware-based detection and response mechanisms that enable IT managers or service providers to disable the platform and/or access to data in case of loss or theft.
WiMAX Connecting Soon
Emerging WiMAX 4G networks around the world will be connecting the plethora of mobile platforms and devices, and specifically within the United States where Sprint XOHM* plans to turn on its first citywide network in Baltimore in September. Globally, more than 400 WiMAX trials and networks2 extend the richness of the mobility experience. Perlmutter also announced that Dell has now joined other computer-makers such as Acer, Asus, Lenovo, Panasonic, and Toshiba as publicly committing to include the Intel® WiMAX/WiFi Link 5050 Series module to future laptop product lines.
Barrett: "Get involved"
During the conference's opening keynote, Intel Chairman Craig Barrett applauded the developer community for technology innovations that contributed to unimagined advances in entertainment and business productivity during the past 40 years. He said the impact of their work is borderless and challenged them to collaborate and use their technology expertise to inspire and empower the billions of people who have recently joined the world's free economic system.
"Technology is a tool to address some of the world's most pressing challenges related to health care, education, economic development and the environment," said Barrett, who also chairs a United Nations initiative on technology in the developing world. "No nations or individuals are untouched by these issues. Get involved. Be part of the solution."
Barrett also announced that Intel will award four $100,000 prizes to the most innovative ideas for applying technology to meet unmet needs related to education, health care, economic development and the environment. Ideas will be evaluated for sustainability and innovativeness of the solution. More details on the INSPIRE•EMPOWER Challenge are available at

With NVIDIA losing it's steam against the HD 4800 series. NVIDIA is playing the PhysX game.
From what we gathered, with Forceware 177.79 driver and latest PhysX Driver, you can run a NVIDIA card as the main GPU and uses the 2nd NVIDIA 9600GT (recommended) to be in charge of the PhysX processing. At this moment, you will require 2 monitors, plugging one card to each monitor. This problem should be resolve in future driver versions.
A list of demos on PhysX can be found here
http://www.nvidia.com/content/forcew...s/download.asp
It could only be a matter of time the drivers accept the a ATi card as the main GPU and a NV GPU as a PhysX card.

StarHub Launches Video-On-Demand and On Demand Channels
StarHub to offer widest range of Video-On-Demand content in Singapore
New offerings include leading content with advanced windows
Singapore, 19 August 2008 – StarHub Digital Cable customers can soon enjoy their favourite programmes anytime they desire. Come tomorrow, StarHub will launch its suite of true on-demand services. Named Demand TV, StarHub’s pay TV customers can look forward to the widest range of quality content that will be available upon their “demand”.
“We are confident that TV viewers in Singapore will be delighted with Demand TV,” said Mr Patrick Lim, StarHub’s Head of Cable TV Services. “Harnessing technology to place greater flexibility into the hands of our customers has always been an ongoing process for StarHub. Three years ago, we introduced Singapore’s first near Video-On-Demand service. In 2006, we rolled out Smart TV which enabled customers to record and playback ‘live’ TV and last year, we evolved the Digital Video Recorder deployed for Smart TV to today’s HubStation device which allows users to watch, talk and surf at the same time.”
To cater to a wide audience, StarHub’s Demand TV will offer two categories of on-demand services – Video-On-Demand (one-off purchases) and On Demand Channel (unlimited library access for a flat monthly subscription).
Video-On-Demand
With Video-On-Demand, StarHub Digital Cable customers can make one-off purchases of content and view the selected content whenever and as many times as they wish, over a limited time period. StarHub will offer both standalone single programmes as well as selections of TV series (choice of by episode or by series).
The single programmes include Barclays Premier League (BPL) matches, WWE Monthly Specials such as WWE SummerSlam 2008 and WWE Unforgiven, and movies covering Hollywood, Bollywood and Indonesian titles such as The Cleaner (rated ‘16’), The Vantage Point, Duyung, Chanting, Rama Rama Kya Hai Drama and Halla Bol.
For TV series, StarHub has scored a deal with major studio CBS to offer its hit TV series on Demand TV’s Video-On-Demand platform. CBS’ titles include CSI and Numb3rs, and from September, the latest seasons of these hugely popular series will be available to StarHub as early as 24 hours after their US releases. In addition, viewers can choose to catch up on past seasons of selected CBS series on Video-On-Demand.
Leveraging on its close ties with content partners around the world, StarHub has also secured attractive on-demand content for the Chinese-speaking viewers in Singapore. Fans of Asian dramas can look forward to new Taiwanese idol dramas and Korea dramas via Demand TV. In addition, they can also expect dramas by Hong Kong’s leading content provider TVB, which will be aired both in Mandarin and in the original Cantonese language. As an added benefit to customers, some TVB and Taiwanese dramas will be available on a complimentary basis.
On Demand Channel
On Demand Channel, another service of Demand TV, can be purchased on a monthly subscription basis. Subscription to each On Demand Channel will give customers a month's access to a library of programmes that they can watch whenever they like and as often as they wish.
From 20 August, five On Demand Channels will be available for subscription. Three of these channels - Disney Channel @ Play, VV Drama On Demand and TVBJ On Demand, will share similar types of programmes with the respective linear channels currently being offered by StarHub – Disney Channel, VV Drama and TVBJ, and a number of programmes such as Disney Channel's Original Movie starring the Jonas Brothers "Camp Rock" will first be available via Demand TV. VV Drama On Demand will offer dual sound in both Mandarin and Cantonese. StarHub Digital Customers who wish to subscribe to these three On Demand Channels must first subscribe to the respective linear channels.
Tomorrow, StarHub will also launch a brand new dialect channel - Ruyi Hokkien Channel On Demand, which will air dramas, variety shows and music programmes from Taiwan in the original Hokkien language. Ruyi Hokkien Channel On Demand is packaged by StarHub, and the latest and best titles have already been secured for exclusive telecast on the channel.
The fifth On Demand Channel that will be launched on 20 August is BPL On Demand. This will be added to StarHub’s existing Sports Group so that viewers subscribing to the group can have greater control over their viewing of BPL matches and at the same time, incur no additional cost. The introduction of BPL On Demand will bring the number of channels packaged under the Sports Group to 12, giving increased value for money to local sports fans.
StarHub will continue to enhance Demand TV offerings after August. HBO On Demand will soon be added to StarHub’s On Demand Channel line-up. When launched, customers subscribing to HBO Pak (HBO, HBO Family, HBO Hits and HBO Signature) can enjoy a selection of their favourite Hollywood blockbuster movies and HBO Original Series anytime they want to and whenever they want to, at no additional cost.
“The introduction of Demand TV has further augmented StarHub’s position as the top pay TV content provider in Singapore. We are on the constant lookout for ways to reward and give more benefits to our customers, and offering HBO On Demand and BPL On Demand to The HBO PAK and Sports Group customers respectively at no additional cost is another testimony of our efforts. In fact, we are the first operator in the region that is not charging a premium for HBO On Demand to The HBO PAK viewers!” added Mr Lim.
HubStation on rental model
To ensure that customers enjoy a good user experience through not only having content at their own convenience, but also the ability to pause, fast forward and rewind the programmes, StarHub’s Demand TV will be accessed via HubStation.
As of 1 October, StarHub will begin renting HubStations for $8.56 (with GST) monthly, rather than asking customers to purchase the device. StarHub Digital Cable Customers who wish to sample the HubStation for free for a limited trial period prior to October may visit
www.starhub.com/demandtvfor details.
All StarHub Digital Cable customers must subscribe to at least three Basic Groups before taking on additional channels or packages. Existing customers can visit

Do you need SB750 with AMD overdrive to overclock?
Posted on 08/15/2008 @ 05:32 PM
In our test with a Phenom 9550 on ASRock A770CrossFire, we managed to push the CPU to a high of 285x11. That was not possible with most of the AMD 7 series boards we have tested before. In fact, I seriously wonder why you need the SB750 with the AMD
Embedded Controller for AMD OverDrive- Advanced Clock Calibration.
